What Is the Largest Diamond Ring in the World?

Elizabeth Taylor’s famous 69-carat diamond ring that she received from Richard Burton is the largest diamond ring in the world. Burton purchased the diamond in 1969 for $305,000. The ring was so large that he had to have it cut down in order for Taylor to wear it properly. Since the pear-shaped stone was too large to wear comfortably on a ring, Taylor wore it on a necklace.

Even after the ring was cut down, it weighed in at 36.08 carats and was valued somewhere between $150 million and $200 million dollars. It even made a guest appearance on I Love Lucy along with the famous Hope Diamond. When Taylor and Burton got divorced, Taylor auctioned off the stone for $5 million and donated the money to a hospital. It was then re-cut into a cushion shape and set in a ring for Princess Diana, which she later gave back as a gift to Sarah Ferguson who actually wore it on her wedding day. The stone is currently owned by Robert Mouawad where it can be seen at his Beverly Hills storefront.

In 2004, a British jeweler named Atocha Design unveiled a new diamond ring that is nearly twice as large as Taylor’s iconic piece of jewelry. The Tiffany-designed black and white diamond consist of 76 carats of diamonds set in platinum on an 18k gold band. It weighs over 16 ounces and is valued at $70 million. Like Taylor’s ring, it too has been cut to make sure that the wearer can actually wear it on her finger comfortably.

The largest diamond ring in the world is not only a symbol of love and romance, it’s also a symbol of wealth and luxury but also an indicator of economic status and power. Many celebrities and royals have worn these massive pieces of jewelry and it continues to be a trend today.
