The smallest Division I school in the United States is the University of Maine-Presque Isle. Located in Presque Isle, Maine, the school enrolls just under 700 students and is a member of the North Atlantic Conference.
The University of Maine-Presque Isle was founded in 1903 as the Northern Maine Normal School. After several changes in name and ownership, the school joined the University of Maine system in 1968 and officially became the University of Maine-Presque Isle (UMPI). The school has been a member of NCAA Division I since 1993.
At UMPI, student-athletes compete in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, and volleyball. The school is known for its successful baseball team, which has won five conference championships since 2010.
