The United States Department of State is the smallest cabinet department, with a budget of $37.6 billion and about 75,000 employees in 2019. The department’s mission is to “advance the interests of the American people, their safety and prosperity, by leading America’s engagement in the world and by promoting an international order that advances peace, security, freedom and opportunity.”
