Who Is the Father of Electronics?

Who invented these amazing devices and how did they come up with such a life-changing invention? Sir John Ambrose Fleming is renowned as the father of electronics, as he used his knowledge of electrical engineering to design a device that could detect and measure an electric current. He invented this device, called the diode valve or Fleming Valve, in 1904 while working for Marconi’s Wireless Telegraph Company. The diode valve was the first technical device that could detect and amplify signals on an electronic system.

John Ambrose Fleming was born in Lancaster, England on May 29, 1849. When he was fifteen years old, John began his education at the Royal Indian Engineering College in Cooper’s hill. He then received a scholarship that allowed him to study electrical engineering and physics at Finsbury Technical School and City and Guilds of London Institute. At this point in time, there were only eight colleges in the United Kingdom that offered an education in the field of electrical engineering.

After graduating, John began working for a couple of different companies and eventually joined Edison’s company to design electric meters. He then went on to work at Siemens Brothers where he was able to expand his knowledge of physics quite considerably. This allowed him to broaden his horizons, even more, when he decided to begin teaching at the City and Guilds of London Institute.

John Ambrose Fleming was able to use his knowledge of physics, mathematics, electrical engineering, and chemistry when he invented the diode valve in 1904 while working for Marconi’s Wireless Telegraph Company. He also published a series of textbooks that contained what would become known as “Fleming’s rules” in the field of electromagnetism.

John Ambrose Fleming passed away on April 15, 1945, at eighty-six years old while living in Twickenham, England. His contributions to electrical engineering have allowed us to work with electronics and use them so freely today. The Father of Electronics made an enormous contribution that will never be forgotten.
